During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of Vecna. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

In keeping with mysteries this season, the full story behind the encounter originates in the theatrical production the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is known about Brenner's work, the briefcase would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, causing the awakening of his powers—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the control of a malevolent force, much like how Will was possessed by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear associated with the mine demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the series finale ahead.
