‘We Will Miss Him Terribly’: The Actress Meg Ryan Shares Heartfelt Tribute to Rob Reiner
Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the departed filmmaker Rob Reiner, who was her director in the beloved rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
A Heartbreaking Event
Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles at the weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan shared on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “Our gratitude, Rob and Michele, for your faith in true love, stories, and joy. We appreciate your faith in human goodness and your deep patriotism.”
Charges Filed
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, is accused of two counts of first-degree murder and made a court appearance today. He’s being held without bail. Reports indicate that Reiner’s daughter Romy found her father’s body.
“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan continued. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”
Children Share Their Grief
Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy released a message today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”
Colleagues and Friends Remember
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner with a statement shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” it read. “He adored his actors. He elevated his writers. Freedom was his key offering. He listened to ideas and included you in the creative journey. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”
An Enduring Filmography
When Harry Met Sally was a box office and critical triumph in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and scoring Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner met Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were connected through Barry Sonnenfeld, a friend and director.
