UK, UN and EU Condemn an ‘Egregious Wrong’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Imprisonment.
The court decision of political dissident Jimmy Lai, a British national Jimmy Lai to a lengthy prison term in Hong Kong has drawn widespread criticism. Advocacy bodies and multiple governments have described the national security convictions influenced by political considerations.
Widespread Disapproval and Appeals for Liberation
Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper remarked that the two-decade sentence constitutes a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She described the prosecution as politically motivated via a statute aimed at quieting critics of China. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to cease his persecution and free him to his family.
“This outcome illustrates how the imprecise and extensive stipulations of Hong Kong’s national security legislation can be interpreted in violation of universal rights standards,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “deeply regrets” the conclusion of the judicial process and called for his prompt and absolute freedom.
Background of the Case
Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was taken into custody four years ago the imposition of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities after months of pro-democracy protests endorsed by his publication.
He was ultimately convicted on allegations encompassing colluding to publish subversive content and colluding with overseas entities. The latter charges were pursuant to the national security statute.
Family Concerns
Lai’s son, Sebastien, expressed that his father fears dying alone apart from his relatives. Lai's defense lawyers has called him the “planet's most prominent detainee” in custody today.
Sebastien Lai said that while the verdict was anticipated, its announcement felt worse than imagined, even as it offered some “respite” that the legal proceedings had concluded.
Political Repercussions
The sentencing has cast a shadow over diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. British leader Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in January. Yet, any potential progress in securing his freedom is not known.
Sebastien Lai asked the point of improved bilateral relations while his father remains imprisoned, saying it felt “somewhat insensitive.”
Government Reactions
In contrast, the officials from China welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee claimed the verdict showed that “justice is served.”
An official representing China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “chief architect” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and maintained the legal case had been “proper and within the law.” He advised international actors to avoid meddling in what he termed China's internal issues.
A Defining Moment
Media freedom advocates labeled Lai as a icon for declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. The organization's director general said it was a “bleak moment for those who value a liberty of the press.”
Boasting a close to 100% rate of guilty verdicts on security-related crimes, Lai’s harsh punishment is regarded as the strictest yet delivered under the disputed law.
