Torrential Precipitation Worsen Situation for Displaced Gazans, Officials Caution
Intense precipitation over the last seven days have compounded the precarious situation of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced residents in the Gaza Strip, as reported by aid groups.
"Horrendous" Conditions Creates Serious Dangers
A official described the recent storm as "horrendous", with precipitation so intense that as much as 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the streets.
"The recent weather was truly horrendous for the residents. The heavy rains were so intense... And the gusts were so strong," noted the representative.
Officials express extreme worry that minors residing in makeshift shelters in soaked attire will fall victim to hypothermia and various ailments.
Fatalities and Widespread Damage
The health ministry have stated that one baby has passed away from hypothermia and no fewer than 11 other people have died in building collapses triggered by the severe weather.
Other reports put a greater fatality count. Spokespeople stated that several residential buildings had collapsed completely and many others had sustained partial collapse.
- Almost 55,000 families affected by flooding.
- More than 40 official shelters severely flooded.
- Countless residents compelled to relocate again.
Assistance Distribution Considered Insufficient
Organizations have increased distribution of tarpaulins, blankets and garments since the halt in hostilities started, but they have said there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.
"We are operating tirelessly to deliver that assistance and to allocate it, but the magnitude of the needs is so vast that we are faced with thousands of families and minors who are genuinely struggling nightly," stated one representative.
Ongoing Concerns and Ceasefire Plans
The subsequent part of the ceasefire includes plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the pullback of military forces, and other terms.
Relief bodies have underscored the imperative for "increased and sustained relief to meet urgent and long-term requirements."
The conflict was sparked by an attack in October 2023. Later actions have resulted in a high number of lives lost in the territory, according to official data.
