The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
