The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted the pig's pardon.
