Another scenario envisions a drop of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and power requirements.

These effects, a number of which are associated with critical climate thresholds, are considered as improbable but plausible. The researchers said that these scenarios plugged a hole in planning that had left the UK unprepared for worst-case results.
