Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of unneeded offerings could be seen as a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Auction
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures while abroad. The eclectic collection reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They will be put up for sale in a public auction by a Italian fine art auction house. The specific date is yet to be set, although the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Holdings
The presents are currently locked away in a storage room on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away indefinitely.
A complete inventory has not yet been officially released, but partial details were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was reviewed by officials. The discussion centered on if a legal value limit was being respected. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
A Global Array of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
- A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
- Paintings from Moldova.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the oddest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, mainly from her allies, with building relationships with international counterparts and positioning Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.
This unique auction symbolizes a distinct method to handle the state presents that build up during a time in office.
