McLaren Racing Points Finger at Opposing Racers for Team-Mate Crash

Tire detaches from McLaren after impact between Norris and Piastri

One tire comes loose from the McLaren of Lando Norris after he made contact with fellow driver Piastri at the opening of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

McLaren Formula 1 executives Zak Brown and Stella blamed opposing racers for the incident between Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

Piastri, leading Norris in the standings by twenty-two points, crashed into his team-mate after hitting Sauber's Hulkenberg.

The collision forced out both team drivers from the race, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.

Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Incident

Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, told broadcasters that some of the driving at the front was "amateur hour", remarking: "Clearly Hulkenberg hit Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

The team team principal Andrea Stella commented: "The reaction is that we are disappointed that we were denied the opportunity to compete."

"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of experience don't act with necessary care. Enter the initial turn, ensure you avoid harming competitors and carry on."

McLaren clarified that Stella was mentioning both Hulkenberg and Alonso.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

However, former champion Damon Hill, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he thought the Australian had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an F1 race when he decided to cut back to try to overtake his teammate.

The Australian had a stronger launch than the Briton and initially competed on the outside on the ascending approach to the turn.

But he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to hit Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Collision

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what happened, I attempted to cut back on Lando and we were both very far from the corner apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Norris. Unfortunate."

Norris commented: "I just got hit, right? I was not at fault. Behind us events unfolded and I just was unfortunate and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more people further back just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inner side, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the center."

The Sauber driver, who had qualified a best qualifying fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the strong performance from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic."

"Oscar turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and way out of Turn One but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Piastri steered inward and the contact was inevitable."

Aftermath and McLaren's Reaction

The team will review the crash with their racers but only after the event weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on Saturday.

Stella said: "In general disappointed but we accept it, we are now concentrating on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."

"We are in a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to compete, race normally and capitalise on our capabilities."

"Championship points are the most important thing, I prefer not to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A bit more care would be good for all involved."

Standings Impact

The race was won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and thirty-three behind of Norris.

The team boss said: "The implication is what the maths says - we lost eight championship points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong drivers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

The Red Bull driver said he was taking the championship one event at a time.
