Italy's Watchdog Criticizes Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Totally Unreasonable
Italian consumer advocates are sounding the alarm over what they describe as completely unjustified price increases for ski passes this winter season, warning that skiing could become a luxury reserved for the wealthy.
Substantial Price Increases Across Italy
From the majestic Alps and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern areas to the slopes of Abruzzo, prices are poised to increase by as much as 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to recent analysis.
The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now cost skiers €86 per day during the current winter. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a daily ski pass is expected to reach €60, after experiencing significant overcrowding during the previous winter.
Seasonal Pass Costs and Supplementary Charges
At the same time, annual skiing tickets will vary between €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to upwards of €1,800 in the Aosta valley.
The expense of hiring winter sports gear has similarly risen, along with hotel accommodations and dining expenses throughout mountain resorts.
Consumer Group President Cites Unjustified Increases
The consumer association president, heading the watchdog organization, emphasized that the price increases—which operators blame on higher energy costs, resort maintenance, and requests for superior gear—were completely unjustified and not acceptable.
"Both because inflation in Italy are managed effectively and energy tariffs, which had raised operational costs for ski resort operators in 2022, have returned to normal," Melluso noted.
The president further stated that prices have climbed to points where less wealthy individuals are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, altogether.
Tourism Decline and Wider Perspective
Melluso observed a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with a million fewer domestic visitors visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to rising costs.
Even with these hikes, Italy remains a more affordable destination for skiing enthusiasts in western Europe compared to neighboring Switzerland, France, and Austrian locations.
Olympic Context
The increasing worry over skiing costs comes as the country prepares to host the 2026 Winter Games between the first three weeks of February. The nation's top diplomat, the foreign affairs official, recently stated that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations urging a "global truce" during the global competition.
"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a peaceful communication and dialogue... to halt conflicts during the Olympics," Tajani emphasized.
