Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton made remarks following Denver's historic 33-32 win over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
- The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
