Far-Right Former Legislator J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming Head of State.
After a definitive second-round vote, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Agenda Centered On Law and Order and Migration
Known for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily centered on promises to combat increasing crime and significantly restrict immigration.
He repeatedly pointed to foreigners, especially the around 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the race, he issued an stern warning for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.

"There are several questions about what a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not said how he will do them," noted a political science professor.
