British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
